Step Rockets

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!! I’m a little late with blog posts but I promise I have a bunch of drafts I just need to work on before posting them online.

This year has been the year of working with talented musicians and singers. I love these sessions only because I get my own private show of their talent, directed at my camera = directed at me = feeling all the love and feeling like I’m one of those private photographers for concerts (Still waiting for that to happen).

Check them out on https://www.steprockets.com/ & Instagram!!

I’m very thankful for my friend Lee Vue for connecting me with them. I had such a blast working with Step Rockets: Brady, Joshua and Johnny. They’re each so different too so to see how balanced they are with each other despite their different personalties was fun to watch.

As you may notice, we had a lot of fun with Projections and Gels, which is something I love to shoot.

Keep an eye out for all their updates and the photos from this shoot!! :)

Collective Vibe Collaboration

A few weeks ago, I was asked if I would like to join Collective Vibe on their 6 photographers photograph 1 model. Fast forward a few weeks later and we made it happen. Below are the final selection that we made, we had 2 hours to go through the whole shoot and figure out which one shot we wanted to show for votes.

This was a super fun experience, I felt honored to be asked to be one of the guest photographers for this challenge. Shooting for 5 minutes per look did give me a little anxiety attack. I don’t like shooting under the pressure of time crunch but it was a nice challenge and I enjoyed the challenge. Thank you all for your amazing skills for making this happen!!

Celestial Moon Goddess

Hello everyone!!! I know this is a long overdue post but I was reminded of this shoot I did with the super talented ladies: Vanessa Lawson, Brianna Violet, and Victoria Vang. So long story short, I had this amazing shoot with these ladies but we weren't able to post any of them up because I got them accepted into Salyse Magazine. The wait was long....a bit too long that I forgot about them as I continued shooting more projects.

Now you'll get to see more of the photos from the session and there's also a link provided below to view the magazine since we had the honors of being FRONT COVER TOO!!!

I am sooooo incredibly proud of these ladies!! Vanessa Lawson started her own business, launching her fashion line: Porte Celestial. Brianna Violet seems to be painting the world of make up and I'm in love with every new creation she does! You can check her work at Breezy Makeup Art. Victoria is my amazing graphic designer of a sister who's been doing hand crafted mixed media and doodles, you can check her work on her website

Without further ado, more photos from the session.

Spring Montana Road Trip

This has somehow become a half-yearly ritual. To go with our friend Yeej to his hometown in Missoula Montana. This time, we had a large group of Filmmakers, Photographers and Actor/ess and was able to craft and create to our heart's content. We also spent a lot of time exploring, showing the friends who haven't been there the places we visited last time.

Pachia overlooking the scenic spot that shows all of Missoula.

Pachia overlooking the scenic spot that shows all of Missoula.

I'm very thankful to the friends who helped me handle my anxiety during this time. I wasn't expecting myself to go through what I went through and I probably surprised them too. This trip was meant to allow myself to relax and create....which I kind of did. More creating than relaxing.

Glacier National Park, Pachia to the right.

Glacier National Park, Pachia to the right.

Every time we've been to Glacier National Park, we could only see 1-2 spots....it's been super heartbreaking but that's ok! Hopefully the next time we come we'll get to see more and maybe even go camping.

So my main muse this trip is the beautiful and talented Pachia Vang. She was so incredible during this whole trip and I'm so thankful that she decided to come along with us. She is not only the model for a majority of my photos, she's also an upcoming actress who's so insanely talented!! But here are a few of the photos of her during the trip.

The first few photos of Pachia are from a pitstop that we randomly found because we really loved the sunset and wanted to capture it with the reflection. It's an nature sanctuary and if I've learned anything, I absolutely love photographing in nature sanctuaries. The second group of photos are at Yeej's parent's garden. I love greenhouses and they put one up!! So I got really excited and pretty much just made Pachia get dressed really quickly so we could shoot.

I got really lucky this round and was able to photograph the guys too. Specifically our buddy Sijhawm who I didn't realize how big of a fan he was to my work until this trip. So of course, we had our own mini session.

Then there's also the whole gang

NYC for Tribeca Film Festival 2018

I'm a little late with this post but back in April, I spent a wonderful 4 day weekend in NYC with my sister and buddies to celebrate NICE's premiere at 2018 Tribeca Film Festival.

NICE
Director Andrew, Writer and Actor Naomi, and Producer Carolyn at Tribeca Film Festival.

Director Andrew, Writer and Actor Naomi, and Producer Carolyn at Tribeca Film Festival.

NICE, if you haven't heard of it, is a new potential series about Teddy, a black sheep of her conservative Korean-American family dealing with the unexpected return of cancer. It’s created by and stars Naomi Ko, who made a brief but memorable appearance in 2014’s Dear White People. (Directed by Andrew Ahn; April 23) (SUMMARY FROM ETONLINE).

I was able to go behind the scenes to meet all the stars and celebrities since I had photographer's access thanks to Naomi, Andrew and Carolyn. It was such a surreal experience and I felt so noob with all the gears that the pros were using but I got the job done. I met a lot of amazing people at the after party and had lots of fun (thanks to everyone who took care of me). This was such an amazing event in which I feel so honored to be a part of.

Of course, while in NYC, we explored and I had a few spontaneous sessions. Thanks to all the guys who allowed me to put them through the randomness that inspired me at that moment.

Michael's Challenge

I was super excited as soon as I found out that Michael's was challenging creatives to pretty much go into their shop and do what we've always dreamed of doing: photographing inside their store. Who wouldn't take advantage of this challenge?!?! I certainly did - although they announced it right before I got sick so I had to wait a few weeks before I actually finally did anything about it.

Thank you to the lovely model Houa Vang who reached out to me prior to my health for a shoot, I ended up asking to shoot with her for this. She was so lovely to work with and did a super job! Thank you to my awesome sister Victoria Vang for recording footages for me as always. I was able to keep a memory of this awesome day because of her. Check below for the behind the scenes as to how I shot these with no reflector or other source of lighting besides using the light that was given to me.

Collab: Pretty Rock Girl Collection

Three years of being in love with her creations, I finally got a collaboration to happen between us. Pretty Rock Girl Collection has been on my radar for awhile now, I just love her pieces and they're amazing and glam with an edge - which I love! Check her creations out if you haven't yet!!

www.prettyrockgirlcollection.com

I got super lucky and was able to get the amazing Jennifer Chang to model the pieces for me too. Check her out, it took me a year of following her in IG to finally tell myself to just reach out but then she reached out to me first!! She's super awesome, I wish I had reached out to her earlier but it's ok cause we gonna work together again ;)

Special thanks to my sister Victoria for capturing all the footages for me (there's a reason why I've been lacking videos lately - my go-to assistant was too busy to follow me to shoots). She's also an amazing artist so go check out her work too!

Korea Trip!!

If you have been keeping track of me through my social network: IG & FB....you will know that I spent Christmas in Korea. Just so happen to be a few days after my birthday too so I re-celebrated my birthday in Korea with some friends there too.

It took me awhile to finish this post because my hard drive (with all my photos from Korea) crashed TT_TT it was a month of mourning for me basically and going crazy with backing up all my shoots from my other hard drives too. But now that I've gone through all of that, I can go back and reflect on my beautiful trip to Korea.

The first two nights in korea was me, being completely jetlagged and waking up at 6am to knock out at 4pm. Also, shopping drains the heck out of me and my best friend and I spent the first two days in Korea shopping. We met up with my friend Paker (teaches english in Korea, I knew her from camp menogyn back home) and her friends to celebrate my birthday - Korean style. This day was the one day I stayed up until 4am and knocked the jetlag out of my system.

They taught us about Korean Rounds (Korean RESTAURANT ROUNDS - I was full by the first round already = fail) which we had KBBQ, it was soooo gooood. Which is how I was full by the first round already. Second round was at the Chicken and Beer restaurant (photo above) which is where they surprised me with a birthday cake and everything then took us to karaoke. We ate really good when we hung out with them making the last couple of days really sad for us.

I love street food in Korea, it is cheap and delicious and I miss it the most now that I'm back home. We mainly hung out in the touristy areas so we got through by speaking english and a little bit of Korean. Korean food is amazing, I love it. I wish we had better Korean food here in Minnesota.

Now, onwards to the biggest highlight of the trip for me. Gyeongbokgung Palace....is my favorite palace, only because it was the palace I ran around wearing a Hanbok and fulfilled the historial k-drama lover in me. I was the biggest kid there that day....and if I wasn't, I wasn't paying attention to anyone else except taking in the experience and loving every moment of it. To make matters even more interesting, I was also doing a photoshoot of Eric (Paker's friend) who was willing to model for me in exchange for being our translator and taking us around Korea to explore (though Paker was more of the GPS than Eric was, he did a great job as translator though). As I was unable to pull off self portraits, I had Paker take the photos of me instead.

SPECIAL THANKS TO MY FRIEND PAKER WHO WORKED MY CAMERA FOR ME!!!

Of course I wouldn't be the only one to get a photoshoot. I was also able to exchange my photo skills for some models & tour guides. Thank you to Mina & Eric for letting me photograph you two in exchange for taking us around Korea. You guys are awesome!!

My two amazing assistants and travel buddies: Manivanh & Paker

This was the first time I traveled without family and although I love family, I also loved being able to make my own choices and decisions. I did hesitate a lot because I wasn't sure what was the best thing to do culturally in Korea but because my bestie is the best :D she made sure to let me know if I was being weird....which is normal for me :P

Special thanks to Paker, Eric, Mina, Paul, Evee, Zero-One, Michael, and everyone else who made time to hang out with Manivanh and I during our trip to Korea!!! Thank you Manivanh for pretty much taking charge of everything cause let's be honest, I would've gotten lost in Korea without you.

Partnership with 6th Borough Boutique

6th Borough Boutique reached out to be in December to do a partnership and I happily went along with it because I've never done a partnership together. It was super fun and I loved the pieces that I got from them. So basically the partnership was to photograph their jewelry pieces that they sent to me which just gave me more excuses to put together shoots.

My first official shoot of the year was showcasing their pieces with the beautiful model & blogger Sophia Naly Korm, check out her blog: With Meraki. She totally rocked out the pieces and the outfit and we were so thankful the weather wasn't below freezing.

Collab: Linda Vang Photography

Soooo....I'm super behind on updating my blog posts and that's because life has been a whirlwind and kept me busy from everything I had to do. But I'm here, alive and breathing, preparing this blog post for you all.

I had the amazing opportunity to I got to work with the amazing Photographer Linda Vang and again with Designer Keng Xiong this summer (I had worked with Designer Keng before the Fresh Traditions Show in 2016). I met these two while on a road trip from the US to Canada and it was fun and amazing and a lot of driving and a lot of me getting motion sickness. We stopped in Indiana because a friend of mine had gotten married right before we left and she had moved to Indiana with her husband, so of course, we took the time to spend a week or so with her before heading back home to Minnesota. I honestly don't remember the story of how they met my friend but they were super welcoming and loving to us and after learning that Linda was a photographer and Keng was a designer, we had to connect.

When I got home, Linda and I talked about collaborating for months and then when Keng and I made our collaboration happen, Linda and I knew now it definitely had to happen. So we finally decided on a date and on a whim, started planning.

Planning in the beginning was a mess, as always but we ended up with an awesome team. We had Keng modeling random thrifted outfits as well as her own designs. We knew we would be having a team of photographers/videographers: Keng, me, Melissa, Lee and Yeej. We also got the amazing make up artist Moriah Justin who joined us and completed the magical transformations. I also got transformed since I had wanted to experience it and experiencing it, I did!

The location was recommended by Keng as she has driven by it a few times. Its the abandoned City Methodist Church in Gary, Indiana. I had my sister Melissa and my buddies Yeej and Lee join us for the shoot as I knew I needed help driving to get there since it would be a seven hour drive. We were pretty burnt out by all the events that had taken place the week before so I was nervous that it would be a waste of time for them. Thankfully, everything seemed to flow nicely as soon as we all started gathering. We also met a lot of other photographers and the church was so much bigger than we had imagined. There were so many nooks and crannies, of course you had to be careful because everything was slightly falling apart but it was super cool to explore the space.

Much props to Linda and Keng for pretty much planning everything. I was pretty dead with all the events was taking place and I had no inspiration whatsoever but since I had already agreed to this shoot, I couldn't miss it since we planned it so many months ahead already. I went in pretty much telling the ladies not to expect too much creativity out of me because I was completely drained and they were such sweethearts. As mentioned, I got to model for Linda and she completely transformed me. I was so nervous that I would ruin her photos as I am a completely different person when someone else takes photos of me (yes, I cannot channel my self portrait poses...) but she did amazing and I was completely awed with the results.

Here are the photos I took from this collaboration.

New Look

Hello there!!

Thank you for visiting my website!! It has currently gone through a remodel and update. I have successfully updated the website with all my recent shoots and cleared out the old shoots which can all still be seen if you go to my facebook page: maivab or my photography IG @maivabphotography which has pretty much all the shoots I've done if you want to work your way all the way to my beginnings or you can go through the rest of the blog posts to see past posts.

As summer is at an end and fall is coming through, I'd like to thank everyone who worked with me this summer. You guys are the best and will forever hold a place in my heart!! Thank you to all the ladies who allowed me to do crazy stuff to you and designers who allowed me to photograph their pieces. You guys seriously made my summer amazing!!! Thanks to all the guys who I crammed in towards the last few weeks of summer before school started, you guys were so kind and patient with a noob like me. Thank you to all my make up artists & assistants, these shoots wouldn't have been possible if I didn't have you guys to boss around <3 I really hope to work with you all again in the future (so keep an eye out for my random messages)!!!

Since I've accomplished my mini goals that I had set during the summer, I am hoping to start new project which will be focusing on mental health issues. If you know anyone who struggles with depression and anxiety, please send them my way as I want to promote more of the mental health issues in a visual way as I am someone who dealt with depression and still dealing with my own anxieties.

With that being said, thank you for reading through all of this and I hope you enjoy the rest of your day :)

Portrait Session: Fuechee Thao

I consider this my first official male shoot because it's one that I planned myself and the sole focus was for a male. Fuechee is my nephew in law and I've known him for some years (ever since his sister married my nephew) so I've watched him grow up into the handsome guy he is now. I was super excited when he was up for being my first test subject.

I've been doing some research on how to pose guys and watching tons of videos and I figured I wanted to focus on the asian men photoshoots - which meant I just focused on a lot of Kpop groups and how they create their look books and video teasers such.

This shoot was for my experimenting purposes so we went into direct sunset for the shoot as well as indoor studio shots since I'm still learning how to 'master' studio photography. Throughout this whole session, Fuechee was so patient and nice!! So very thankful to have him as my first official male model (only saying this because I did photograph John & Julie but that shoot was couple based with some single portraits on the side).

I've been shooting a lot of big projects lately and I just wanted to rest (I'm suppose to be resting this week) but I also really craved just to do some random shoots instead of planning so much. But my favorite shoots are these simple portrait sessions where it's literally the model and I walking around, getting to know each other and photographing where ever I spot a spot that I want to try shooting.

SO, when Julianna reached out to me through Instagram, I was super excited since I had just finished a family session and was craving a random portrait session and well, fate brought her to me <3 (slightly dramatic, I know). But I had let her know that I'd just like to do a test shoot since I have no real idea what I wanted to do and she was all down for it, which I was so thankful for.

The shoot itself was super fun and Julianna is such an amazing model to work with. She was so damn easy to photograph, I'm super excited to shoot with her again. Since there was no real agenda to the shoot, here are some of my favorite shots. Just talk about her interaction with nature, I absolutely loved the vibe she was throwing out.

Collab: Houa Vang & Oskar Ly

ONE OF MY CHILDHOOD DREAMS CAME TRUE

I'm not even joking around. Houa Vang is one of my biggest inspiration, I found her work back in middle school and I've been looking up to her since. You see my self portraits, yes....inspired by her and a little push from my teachers and friends, I started creating my own. So getting to collaborate with her was a freaking dream come true and I absolutely loved hanging out with her.

To make it even more extravagant, we were able to connect with Designer Oskar Ly on photographing her beautiful pieces. I literally just started asking designers if I could collaborate with them this summer and Oskar is a pretty huge deal (to me) as I've seen her as an artist and curator and all the above. Having her allow me to photograph her pieces with a huge team was a dream come true.

So let's start with behind the scenes because I also loved that I got to photograph Houa in her zone too. We had the beautiful Sophia Korm as our model, the amazing Mai Vue as our make up & hair stylist, we got lucky to have so many assistants: Yeej Moua, Touchaingkong Yang, & Houa's little brother.

This was the first shoot that I had artificial lighting as my main light source. I was super nervous that the images wouldn't turn out well but thankfully they did and I love how the images came out. Sophia is such a strong, confident and fierce individual, she totally completed the whole look.

Portrait Session: Kaozong Thao

I got to work with the beautiful Kaozong Thao again!! YAY!!! Instead of being in freezing weather, we got to enjoy the heat in the summer this time and it was lots of fun. She's so incredibly flawless and beautiful, it makes photographing such a breeze.

This was a closed portrait session, it was pretty much just me and her walking and talking while stopping every few steps to snap a few photos. It felt so nice and relaxing after doing so many large(ish) collaborations that includes MUA, Assistant & Model. Not that I don't love that, I do, the crew makes it so easy to prepare for the next look but this shoot was pretty much taking a breather from that process and going back into my roots: just me and the model and making things work.

Model: Kaozong Thao Photographer: Katherina Vang

So one of my buddies suggested I use my primes again. I don't exactly dislike them, my 24-70mm just gives me the ability to shoot portraits and wide without having to bother with changing lens. Super useful go-to lens whenever I'm shooting fine arts or weddings. Going with his suggestion, I shot this whole session with my 85mm and I'm super glad I did. The photos all turned out so beautifully!! I'm super in love with this whole session, scroll down to see more from this shoot.
