Home D.I.Y. "Studio"

A year ago when I moved from my brother’s to my sister’s house, I had to find new ways to photograph myself without my trusty bathroom (since the bathroom at my sister’s is smaller). During this time, I’ve kept a wall blank in order to use it for full portraits and while that was fun, there was some problems that came along: my mom staying in the same room during her surgery which required another bed in my room which took up my blank wall and now a corner that I used to keep readily available is covered with a shelf to help me organize all my arts and crafts.

My self portraits are going to be a forever thing for me I feel, even when I’m old and cringey looking and they’re going to forever evolve and change as I have/will. So because my walls ended up being all covered, I had to get a little more creative.

Ultimately, my D.I.Y. studio has become my new favorite thing to do. In the image above, I taped my sparkling glittering christmas themed wrapping paper on my dresser: It’s wide enough to take a headshot with. Then I taped the red cellophane onto the top of the dresser, just a little further from the glitter material, so i could play around without worrying about it falling on me.

These are my favorite moments, when i’m testing myself on how creative I can be in a space that isn’t ideal. I wish I could say I have my own studio space but I don’t. So I make do with what I have.

Fast forward six months later and I’m completely in love with this set up for myself. I would probably find a blank wall to tape my wrapping paper onto for client/model shoots but as for now, I love this. I got smarter this second time around and was able to transport my mirror closer, therefore giving me easier access to see my posture.

Random fun fact because I haven’t updated since Jan: I wanted to be a hairstylist and nail technician when I was a little girl (along with vet and robotics programmer), you may say I was obsessed. I stopped towards freshman year of high school when my older sister and mom told me that it wasn’t realistic and threw all my passion into Photoshop.
