Collab: Pretty Rock Girl Collection

Three years of being in love with her creations, I finally got a collaboration to happen between us. Pretty Rock Girl Collection has been on my radar for awhile now, I just love her pieces and they're amazing and glam with an edge - which I love! Check her creations out if you haven't yet!!

www.prettyrockgirlcollection.com

I got super lucky and was able to get the amazing Jennifer Chang to model the pieces for me too. Check her out, it took me a year of following her in IG to finally tell myself to just reach out but then she reached out to me first!! She's super awesome, I wish I had reached out to her earlier but it's ok cause we gonna work together again ;)

Special thanks to my sister Victoria for capturing all the footages for me (there's a reason why I've been lacking videos lately - my go-to assistant was too busy to follow me to shoots). She's also an amazing artist so go check out her work too!

Check out the video for behind the scenes and scroll past for more photos from the photoshoot.

I fell in love with Rammy Mohamed's designs after spotting them on IG. Finding out that she is a local MN artist, I knew I had to work with her.

Special thanks to Joylin for modeling for us & In Progress for allowing us to use the space. I also made a quick behind the scenes video from the shoot so check it out!

I loved all the photos from the shoot so narrowing them down to edit was super hard for me. Check below for some of my favorite final products from the shoot.

Korea Trip!!

If you have been keeping track of me through my social network: IG & FB....you will know that I spent Christmas in Korea. Just so happen to be a few days after my birthday too so I re-celebrated my birthday in Korea with some friends there too.

It took me awhile to finish this post because my hard drive (with all my photos from Korea) crashed TT_TT it was a month of mourning for me basically and going crazy with backing up all my shoots from my other hard drives too. But now that I've gone through all of that, I can go back and reflect on my beautiful trip to Korea.

The first two nights in korea was me, being completely jetlagged and waking up at 6am to knock out at 4pm. Also, shopping drains the heck out of me and my best friend and I spent the first two days in Korea shopping. We met up with my friend Paker (teaches english in Korea, I knew her from camp menogyn back home) and her friends to celebrate my birthday - Korean style. This day was the one day I stayed up until 4am and knocked the jetlag out of my system.

They taught us about Korean Rounds (Korean RESTAURANT ROUNDS - I was full by the first round already = fail) which we had KBBQ, it was soooo gooood. Which is how I was full by the first round already. Second round was at the Chicken and Beer restaurant (photo above) which is where they surprised me with a birthday cake and everything then took us to karaoke. We ate really good when we hung out with them making the last couple of days really sad for us.

I love street food in Korea, it is cheap and delicious and I miss it the most now that I'm back home. We mainly hung out in the touristy areas so we got through by speaking english and a little bit of Korean. Korean food is amazing, I love it. I wish we had better Korean food here in Minnesota.

Now, onwards to the biggest highlight of the trip for me. Gyeongbokgung Palace....is my favorite palace, only because it was the palace I ran around wearing a Hanbok and fulfilled the historial k-drama lover in me. I was the biggest kid there that day....and if I wasn't, I wasn't paying attention to anyone else except taking in the experience and loving every moment of it. To make matters even more interesting, I was also doing a photoshoot of Eric (Paker's friend) who was willing to model for me in exchange for being our translator and taking us around Korea to explore (though Paker was more of the GPS than Eric was, he did a great job as translator though). As I was unable to pull off self portraits, I had Paker take the photos of me instead.

SPECIAL THANKS TO MY FRIEND PAKER WHO WORKED MY CAMERA FOR ME!!!

Of course I wouldn't be the only one to get a photoshoot. I was also able to exchange my photo skills for some models & tour guides. Thank you to Mina & Eric for letting me photograph you two in exchange for taking us around Korea. You guys are awesome!!

My two amazing assistants and travel buddies: Manivanh & Paker

This was the first time I traveled without family and although I love family, I also loved being able to make my own choices and decisions. I did hesitate a lot because I wasn't sure what was the best thing to do culturally in Korea but because my bestie is the best :D she made sure to let me know if I was being weird....which is normal for me :P

Special thanks to Paker, Eric, Mina, Paul, Evee, Zero-One, Michael, and everyone else who made time to hang out with Manivanh and I during our trip to Korea!!! Thank you Manivanh for pretty much taking charge of everything cause let's be honest, I would've gotten lost in Korea without you.

Partnership with 6th Borough Boutique

6th Borough Boutique reached out to be in December to do a partnership and I happily went along with it because I've never done a partnership together. It was super fun and I loved the pieces that I got from them. So basically the partnership was to photograph their jewelry pieces that they sent to me which just gave me more excuses to put together shoots.

My first official shoot of the year was showcasing their pieces with the beautiful model & blogger Sophia Naly Korm, check out her blog: With Meraki. She totally rocked out the pieces and the outfit and we were so thankful the weather wasn't below freezing.

My second shoot with a necklace from 6th Borough Boutique was with my beautiful niece Skyler. She and I decided to have a little fun shooting by the window in my room since the snow storm was going crazy outside but the natural light that was coming through was beautiful.

Collab: Linda Vang Photography

Soooo....I'm super behind on updating my blog posts and that's because life has been a whirlwind and kept me busy from everything I had to do. But I'm here, alive and breathing, preparing this blog post for you all.

I had the amazing opportunity to  I got to work with the amazing Photographer Linda Vang and again with Designer Keng Xiong this summer (I had worked with Designer Keng before the Fresh Traditions Show in 2016). I met these two while on a road trip from the US to Canada and it was fun and amazing and a lot of driving and a lot of me getting motion sickness. We stopped in Indiana because a friend of mine had gotten married right before we left and she had moved to Indiana with her husband, so of course, we took the time to spend a week or so with her before heading back home to Minnesota. I honestly don't remember the story of how they met my friend but they were super welcoming and loving to us and after learning that Linda was a photographer and Keng was a designer, we had to connect.

When I got home, Linda and I talked about collaborating for months and then when Keng and I made our collaboration happen, Linda and I knew now it definitely had to happen. So we finally decided on a date and on a whim, started planning.

Planning in the beginning was a mess, as always but we ended up with an awesome team. We had Keng modeling random thrifted outfits as well as her own designs. We knew we would be having a team of photographers/videographers: Keng, me, Melissa, Lee and Yeej. We also got the amazing make up artist Moriah Justin who joined us and completed the magical transformations. I also got transformed since I had wanted to experience it and experiencing it, I did!

The location was recommended by Keng as she has driven by it a few times. Its the abandoned City Methodist Church in Gary, Indiana. I had my sister Melissa and my buddies Yeej and Lee join us for the shoot as I knew I needed help driving to get there since it would be a seven hour drive. We were pretty burnt out by all the events that had taken place the week before so I was nervous that it would be a waste of time for them. Thankfully, everything seemed to flow nicely as soon as we all started gathering. We also met a lot of other photographers and the church was so much bigger than we had imagined. There were so many nooks and crannies, of course you had to be careful because everything was slightly falling apart but it was super cool to explore the space.

Much props to Linda and Keng for pretty much planning everything. I was pretty dead with all the events was taking place and I had no inspiration whatsoever but since I had already agreed to this shoot, I couldn't miss it since we planned it so many months ahead already. I went in pretty much telling the ladies not to expect too much creativity out of me because I was completely drained and they were such sweethearts. As mentioned, I got to model for Linda and she completely transformed me. I was so nervous that I would ruin her photos as I am a completely different person when someone else takes photos of me (yes, I cannot channel my self portrait poses...) but she did amazing and I was completely awed with the results.

Here are the photos I took from this collaboration.

Portrait Session: Julianna Thao

I've been shooting a lot of big projects lately and I just wanted to rest (I'm suppose to be resting this week) but I also really craved just to do some random shoots instead of planning so much. But my favorite shoots are these simple portrait sessions where it's literally the model and I walking around, getting to know each other and photographing where ever I spot a spot that I want to try shooting.

SO, when Julianna reached out to me through Instagram, I was super excited since I had just finished a family session and was craving a random portrait session and well, fate brought her to me <3 (slightly dramatic, I know). But I had let her know that I'd just like to do a test shoot since I have no real idea what I wanted to do and she was all down for it, which I was so thankful for.

The shoot itself was super fun and Julianna is such an amazing model to work with. She was so damn easy to photograph, I'm super excited to shoot with her again. Since there was no real agenda to the shoot, here are some of my favorite shots. Just talk about her interaction with nature, I absolutely loved the vibe she was throwing out.

Collab: Melissa Moua & Savannah Phoukatam

This was one of the most fun session I've ever had hands down. The ladies and I connected so well, we spent most of the shoot just talking and laughing. I met the beautiful Melissa Moua during work time at In Progress, she was one of the artist I taught for a few hours on photoshop and then I met her again during the Qhia Dab Neeg Film Festival. I reached out to Savannah on Instagram when she liked and commented on the shoot with Lucy & Stacey. A little about these beautiful ladies:

Melissa Moua is a Filmmaker based in Minnesota, she currently won Best Cinematography Award for her short, "Memories". You can find her on instagram: @melissamoua

Savannah Phoukatam is a Make Up Artist who just moved from Boston to Minnesota. I was very excited as she reached out to me to work together - we slightly had fan girl moments when we contacted each other to work and she is so damn amazing, you guys don't want to miss this talented soul! She's looking for collaborations so feel free to reach out to her! Check her out on Instagram: @savanahtsang

As this was the first time Melissa would be modeling, I wanted to easer her in so we had three different looks. The second look, I wanted to try something completely different from the vibe her instagram gave off and I'd like to think she pulled it off beautifully. The last one was just a little bonus round that we had lots of fun putting random things together.

I have to say Savanah is freaking amazing and so easy going. I don't work with many make up artists as she was one of the first artists to reach out to me and get super excited to work with me so seeing her in action working her magic was super....let's just say I fan-girled quite a bit during this session.

The team was great!! Special thanks to Touchaingkong Yang for dealing with my lighting needs. He totally worked all the lights pretty much as we ladies spazzed our hearts out, best assistant ever!!

So during the shoot, I was so completely into photographing that I forgot to take behind the scenes photos and I had my assistant helping me out the whole time with set up. So instead, here is the MAKE UP PROCESS - not a make up tutorial just to clarify - just the process of how the amazing Savanah does what she does and then the photos from her beautiful work. Also, sorry for the music, I haven't worked the audio through youtube before so it ends and doesn't come back....video noob here.

Collab: Stacey Moua Photography

We first reached out to each other when Stacey posted up a need for editing help a year back or so and I reached out to her first through messenger since the post got a bit spammed and I lost track of the questions. Fast forward, my friend Cha told me that I should meet up with Stacey in person because Stacey is amazingly cool and lots more of other facts that finally pushed me to contact her.

The first time I reached out to collaborate with her, I caught the flu and couldn't make it. I felt so bad that I just kept to myself until Cha and I got together again and she was like, JUST CONNECT AGAIN GIRL! So that night, I drafted my message and sent it to her hoping there wouldn't be any more issues that come up.

So before the shoot, it was raining and I was hoping (because MN weather is bi-polar) that it would stop raining when we got to location. Which it did! Thankfully! During the shoot, it was beautiful, the sunset after the rain just helped the glow on her skin and it was just beautiful. Although when my sister and I headed back home, we got lost, it was a fun mini adventure.

Thank you Stacey for putting this shoot together! You gave me more confidence to contact creatives about working together. It's one of the struggles I go through having anxiety and I'm thankful to have awesome people like you guys help me work through my anxiety with me.

So here's a little clip of what went on behind the scenes. We're missing a chunk of the middle of the photoshoot because we were putting our assistant to use (I have my assistants record if I don't have them hold the reflector or something).

Snow & Fur

SIDE NOTE: I'm a little behind on blog updates only because I had so many shoots within a certain time period so now i'm trying to catch up.

Another winter break photoshoot with the lovely Kaozong. The weather was freezing but at least it was the better day of weather compared to the rest of the week. I was lucky enough to have three assistants to make sure that I had everything together and also get a behind the scenes video. We spent a good 30 minutes shooting until it got too cold to do anything else. So thankful to have such a brave first time model who wasn't layered up much but still braved the cold weather.

Creative Shoot with Xiomara

A few weeks ago, I posted on my social media letting people know that I'm always up for a collaboration. A few days after that post, Xiomara personally contacted me to work together. For her first time modeling, Xiomara did an amazing job. She was super upbeat and bright, I absolutely loved working with her!

My assistant and I worked on creating her look and played around with her hair with the items that I had available. She brought her dresses for us to play around with. This was a great first time shoot with her as we eased her from simple portraiture to more dramatic and extravagant looks.

To create the metallic look, I covered her with basically one metallic silver eyeshadow that was part of my metallic colored palette. The crown is a creation a did a few months ago using wire, hot glue and silver spray. The earring, I grabbed from my sister's store Hmong ABC. The pearl necklace I found in the party section at target.
